Wellness e-Tip: Protecting our bees (and other pollinators) means protecting our food chain.
Honey bees need our help!
Honey bees and pollinators are responsible for 1 out of 3 mouthfuls of food and drink we consume. Over 300 pesticides in the class of ‘neonicotinoids’ on the market today are known to destroy the bee’s brain and nervous system. Toxic levels of these pesticides now exist in many rivers and streams, yet the EPA is poised to allow the use of another pesticide, sulfoxaflor, even though it admits it is highly toxic to honey bees. In contrast, this week the European Union has passed legislation mandating a ban of the use of these chemicals on the entire European continent. Italy, Slovenia, France and Germany have already banned the use of these chemicals.
Refrain from using pesticides. Follow-up with your Master Gardeners about non-chemical ways to discourage unwanted insects and pests. Encourage your family and friends not to use these chemicals.
Plant bee-friendly crops. Some of our favorites include borage, California poppy, lavender, and phacelia. More suggestions can be found at www.thedailygreen.com/going-green/tips/bee-friendly-plants
Sign this Google petition telling the EPA not to allow continued and increased use of sulfoxaflor.
